My Hero: A D-Day Veteran of the 745th Tank Battalion Who Landed on Omaha Beach

At Hero Forge Apparel, honoring our heroes isn’t just a mission — it’s part of our family history.

My father was one of those heroes.

A Sergeant in the 745th Tank Battalion, he landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 — D-Day — one of the most pivotal and dangerous moments in World War II. Alongside his fellow soldiers, he faced unimaginable conditions as Allied forces fought to liberate Europe from Nazi control. During the war, he was wounded in combat, yet like so many of the men of his generation, he carried on with courage, duty, and quiet determination.

When the war ended and he returned home, he built a new life grounded in creativity and storytelling. He first pursued photography, and eventually became a cinematographer in the motion picture industry, capturing stories through the lens of a camera after having lived through history himself.

Despite moving forward with his life and career, he never forgot the men he served beside. My father remained deeply connected to his brothers from the 745th Tank Battalion throughout his life. They gathered monthly for breakfast and held annual reunions, keeping alive the bond forged in the most difficult of circumstances.

That same sense of brotherhood and service continues to inspire us today.

As part of that commitment, Hero Forge Apparel proudly donates $1 from every product sold to the Gary Sinise Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and their families. This cause is especially meaningful to us, as my father knew Gary Sinise’s father through the motion picture industry, creating a connection that feels both personal and fitting.

Through this effort, we hope to honor the legacy of my father and the countless heroes who served beside him.

The men of the 745th Tank Battalion were among the finest soldiers our nation has ever known. As one tribute to their service so powerfully states:

“If perchance in the post-war world you encounter a man who says that he fought in Europe with the 745th Tank Battalion, salute him and offer him a drink — for you have encountered one of the best soldiers in the world. You have encountered a man who has contributed a great deal toward ending the conquests of the Nazis and bringing peace to the world. You have encountered a man of whom the entire army is proud.”

My father was one of those men.

And to me, he will always be my hero.
